How to Punch Holes (For Sewing!) in Leather Like a Pro

Punching holes in leather is an essential step for hand stitching projects like wallets, bags, and belts. Proper hole placement and technique ensure that stitches are even, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. In this guide, we’ll focus specifically on preparing holes for hand sewing, and you can watch the full 6-minute video for a hands-on demonstration.

Common Tools:

  • Stitching Chisels or Pricking Irons – Ideal for creating evenly spaced holes for hand stitching.

  • Awl  – A pointed tool used to create small guide holes for stitching, these come in several shapes.
  • Hand Punches – A single or multi-size hole punch that removes leather when used.
  • Mallet or Maul – A non-metal hammer to drive chisels through the leather.

  • Cutting Mat or Punching Surface – Protects your work surface and ensures clean cuts.

  • Wing Divider or Stitching Groover – Helps with precise spacing and alignment.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Mark Your Stitch Line

Use a wing divider, stitching groover or ruler to mark a consistent distance from the edge of the leather where your stitches will go.

Step 2: Use Pricking Irons or Stitching Chisels

  • Pricking irons help mark the hole placement before punching with an awl.

  • Stitching chisels punch holes through the leather in even intervals.

Step 3: Position and Punch the Holes

  • Align the chisel over your marked line at a 90º angle.

  • Hold it steady and strike firmly with your mallet or maul.

  • Continue along the stitch line, slightly overlapping the last hole to maintain even spacing.

Step 4: Check Your Holes and Clean Up

  • Ensure holes go cleanly through the leather.

  • Remove any leather debris with a needle or sandpaper for a smooth finish.

  • Apply leather conditioner if needed to prevent cracking or stiffness.
