Gift Idea: Tooled Wristlet with Broken H Designs
Gift Idea: Tooled Wristlet with Broken H Designs
Abbie Hunt, owner of Broken H Designs, created a Tooled Wristlet that doubles as a keychain, clutch, and on-the-go essential. It's perfect for keeping your must-haves close and your hands free. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to make one of your own!

"I walked into my first Tandy Leather store at 8 years old and instantly fell in love with all they had to offer. Having the opportunity to create this project for others—and hopefully help them fall in love with leatherwork the way I did—reminds me why I started in the first place. There’s something really special about turning a simple kit into something uniquely personal." - Abbie

Instructions:
Tooling
Step 1: Cut out your materials: (1) 1" x 12" rectangle of 6/7 oz Veg Tan & (1) 3/4" x 2" rectangle of 3/4 oz Veg Tan.
Step 2: Trace the tooling pattern onto the 1" x 12" strap.
Step 3: Wet your leather belt with an ample amount of water using either a sponge or a spray bottle. (User discretion just ensure it's wet enough to tool and not too wet where it becomes difficult)
Step 4: Pick a side of the wristlet to begin carving into it with your swivel knife and follow it down.
Step 5: Tape the back of your project with painter or masking tape to prevent it from widening or stretching out while you tool on it
Step 6: Tool the pattern using the following stamps in order:
- P367 Craftool® Stamp Teardrop Shader Smooth (SKU: 6367-00) QTY: 1
- B203 Craftool® Stamp Beveler Smooth (SKU: 6203-00) QTY: 1
- A102 Craftool® Stamp Background Grounder Round (SKU: 6102-01) QTY: 1
- V407 Craftool® Stamp Veiner Scalloped & Lined (SKU: 6407-00) QTY: 1
- U858 Craftool® Stamp Mulefoot Serrated Pointed (SKU: 6858-00) QTY: 1
- C709 Craftool® Stamp Camouflage (SKU: 6709-00) QTY: 1
Step 7: Use a #2 Edge Beveler to round the edges of your wristlet (inside and outside!)
Step 8: Once the leather has dried, dye the edges of the keychain using a paintbrush and
the Fiebing’s Light Brown Pro Dye. Let dry fully before continuing to the next step.
Step 9: Oil both straps using a Round Sponge and Dr. Jackson's Pure Neatsfoot Oil. Let fully dry before continuing to next step.
Step 10: Coat the front of both straps with Fiebing’s Pro-Resist. Let fully dry for at least 24
hours before moving forward.
Step 11: Coat the front of both straps with Eco-Flo Gel Antique and wipe off any excess dye. Let dry for at least 24 hours.
Step 12: Add a coat of Fiebing’s Resolene to add a protective finish to both straps.
Assembly
Step 1: Apply the Eco-Flo Gum Tragacanth Burnishing Agent to the edges and use a to finish the edges.
Step 2: Once the burnishing agent has been applied, burnish the edges using a
wooden slicker.
Step 3: Punch a hole for the Chicago Screw in the 1" x 12" strap on both ends according to the pattern.
Step 4: Punch two holes in the 3/4" x 2" piece of leather according to the pattern.
Step 5: Fold the both straps in half. Add the swivel snap to the smaller piece of leather.
Step 6: With both straps folded so the dyed sides are facing out, assemble the keychain.
Step 7: Refer to projects finished pictures for help with assembly.

Broken H Designs
Abbie Hunt is the owner of Broken H Designs, a small leathercraft business she launched as a high school freshman in 2018 after falling in love with the art of tooling leather. Her passion for working with leather began even earlier—after stepping into her first Tandy Leather store with her dad at just 8 years old. It took a lot of years for Abbie to gain the courage to start leatherworking, but now she wishes she had started earlier. Based in Eastern Oregon, Abbie balances her passion for leatherwork with her full-time graduate studies in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and her full-time work at a Community Mental Health agency. For her, leatherworking is a grounding creative outlet—a way to slow down and stay connected to something tangible and lasting. Abbie is passionate about keeping the art of leathercraft alive and hopes to inspire others to join the community of creating timeless leather art.
